It’s not that Kivrin didn’t have a crib before, although I admit that we mostly have used the cosleeper, the pack’ ‘n play and our bed thus far with her. But since Kivrin has started pulling up to her knees, today Dan lowered the crib mattress and turned her crib into a big girl crib. We spent some time getting used to it, and so far, as long as both mommy and daddy are around and she is wide awake, she loves it. The jury is still out on the nighttime experience, since she is sleeping upstairs in our room again tonight!

Lissa and Dan both had the day off for working the weekend, and it also worked out to be Lissa’s 31st birthday, which was convenient and also quite nice. Dan hid little (and big) presents for me throughout the house and I am still finding them. He was very sneaky — I think he must have been inspired by the whole Easter egg concept!

After helping me open some of my presents, Kivrin went to school in the morning while we continued to work on babyproofing projects around the house. After a lovely lunch at Paisano’s, we picked Kivrin up from school and headed to the mall for Kivrin’s much-belated 6-month portraits. Okay, so she is much closer to 8 months than 6 months, but at least we finally made it to the portrait studio for a great photo shoot with our favorite Sears photographer, Jeanette.

Here is a preview of the photos on flickr, although if you are related to Kivrin by blood, marriage or friendship, you will probably be receiving some of your very own prints soon!

I crocheted Kivrin an Easter bunny for her first Easter morning. She liked to chew on its ears.

We got up early on Easter to be at the Easter breakfast at Dan’s parent’s church in Kansas City by 9am. Kivrin cooperated at first, then had a huge messy diaper that we had to stop to change at the Lawrence service area, so she got dressed in her Easter outfit in the car. She even posed for a picture!

Taking pictures of toddlers together is impossible! They don’t follow directions, and they keep crawling off to do other things. Even with 6 adults trying to get their attention, these were the best shots we could get of Thomas and Kivrin together.

Kivrin crawling after Easter eggs with her Grandma.

Thomas (who started walking recently!) plays with Grandpa.

Kivrin happily ate her Easter card while Grandpa helped her new monkey attack her with kisses!

Easter is certainly more exciting with two babies!

Thomas tries on the Easter bunny ears, with help from his dad, Jon.

This picture only conveys the chaos a little bit. Notice how both kids have open mouths, then imagine them both shouting/singing/talking/babbling. Now imagine it again but louder. And put everyone in motion. Or in pursuit of the same toy.

We hope you enjoy this compilation video of a few recent Kivrin clips…

Kivrin is more mobile than ever. She crawled under the kitchen table to retrieve a pamphlet from the floor. Once she gets off the carpet, she has trouble, because the hardwood floor is slippery so she tends to get stuck under the table quite often. Baby proofing is progressing about as quickly as she is getting into stuff.
This morning, I just played with her on the kitchen floor and rearranged and cleaned everything as she got into it. She is obsessed with any tiny thing on the floor that she might be able to eat, a game she unfortunately learned at school by hanging out under the row of high chairs in her classroom looking for lost cheerios.

It didn’t matter how many times I helped her, Kivrin was only happy with this new toy when all of the pop-up animals were latched down. She isn’t interested in making them pop up again, but enjoys pushing them all down again and again. Oh well.
One of Kivrin’s teachers told me a silly story about her yesterday. They were sitting together on the floor and whever the teacher looked away, Kivrin would make a little noise like a growl to get her attention, then smile real big when the teacher looked back at her.
This morning, Kivrin growled at me twice when we were playing. It is the cutest thing, a throaty little exclamation, and very friendly/playful.
I probably can’t capture it on video, so you’ll have to use your imagination!

Kivrin is very into “big girl foods” that she can try to eat on her own, so we tried tofu this week and she LOVES it!

There isn’t much time between work and bedtime, but we are making the most of it on these nice spring days!

After all of the talk around our house this past month about the NCAA tournament, Kivrin apparently couldn’t let the championship game pass her by–she woke up after being in bed for almost two hours and was wide awake in the last 5 minutes of the Mich St. / North Carolina game. (She didn’t get to see the end though, I wisked her away to bed again.)

Tonight I let Kivrin experiment with drinking from a cup. It was a bit messy, even with water, and the towel in her lap didn’t catch everything. She loved it though and kept giggling in between sips.

“I am unicorn baby. I will redefine your mythologies. All unicorns are purple and sparkly, remember that.”

“Come on now. Even unicorns have to stop and wave at kitties. It’s a law of nature.”

“Oh hi, It’s just me, baby Kivrin. I’m playing dress up. Aren’t I cute?”
Gramma Mary sent some AWESOME presents, including this magical unicorn costume. I say magical only because when I tried to put Kivrin in it to take pictures, she seemed to love it and crawled around the living room wearing it, even with the hood up. It was probably a fluke, since she hasn’t even liked wearing hats lately, but it was sure an adorable fluke!!

“I got this bunny for Easter. It’s pretty great.”

“Wow. This thing is neat. I wonder what it does?”

“Oh, I see. It’s got a face on each finger. I like it!”

“Are you still here? I’m playing with my presents from Gramma Mary.”
Independent play (with a parent still in the room, or else she cries) is key at our house right now. Kivrin likes to do her own thing, sometimes with assistance, but often on her own. So, taking pictures of her opening presents was a challenge, because she never wanted to look up from whatever she was busy doing…

What folks are saying…
