By January 6th, the effects of the Christmas blizzard of 2009 were still quite visible.

Kivrin and Daddy watching the remote control helicopter fly around the kitchen. This is a daily occurence in our household.

January 9th – waiting for the Saturday morning storytime at the library with Kyler to begin!

Kivrin and Daddy playing in a box that came from Gramma Mary. Sometimes the box is just as fun as what was inside!

5 days later. Still flying the helicopter in the kitchen. At least I got the helicopter in this shot…

Beware the rhetorical questions with toddlers. “Should your bulldozer help clear the snow?”

This is how Daddy ended up on the front porch with a yellow plastic bulldozer on January 13, 2010, 15 minutes PAST bedtime….

A group shot taken the same night, so that we could wish Kivrin’s cousin Colin a happy birthday on Jan 14th (from all of us!)

(more pictures to come as I have time! I think I’m about 20 GB of photos and videos behind right now!!!)

Kivrin wearing the new Christmas dress that Nana sewed for her. Unfortunately, she was tired and crabby and she refused to look at the camera for a picture. The dress is adorable though!

Colin and Kivrin both sitting in Papa’s lap to read “Twinkle Toes” by Karen Katz. Papa was such a good reader that he had to keep reading more and more books until he almost lost his voice!

Kivrin loves to open the cabinets and drawers in Papa’s kitchen. She discovered that his bottom drawer has dish towels and potatoes, then dragged the bag of potatoes all over the house before I could catch her. Here she is taking them into Papa’s bedroom and offering them to the vaccuum cleaner that is just to the right inside the door.

On Sunday morning early, Colin and Lissa snuggled on the couch under some blankets. Then Kivrin got jealous and insisted on joining us. She wasn’t very sleep though, so it was more of an aerial attack on our nap!

We drove to Kansas City just ahead of the snow storm, hoping to start a restful holiday— instead, Kivrin started throwing up on Christmas Eve with a 24 hour stomach bug! We still braved the Christmas Eve service at Dan’s parents’ church, and made it back to their house safely in the heavy snow.

Christmas Morning, Santa brought two bags of presents for Kivrin to open! One had new Playmobil  trucks and cars and the other bag had a new baby doll. Thankfully, she threw up for the last time on Christmas morning in between opening her Santa presents and was her cheerful self the rest of the day.

On Christmas Day, Kivrin’s cousin Thomas and her Uncle Jon and Aunt Sara came over to celebrate. Kivrin and Thomas had a blast playing together, although since they are both under 2 years old, sharing their new Christmas toys was not at the top of their list of things to do… The 6 grown-ups to 2 toddlers ratio worked out just about right to keep the peace!

Kivrin playing basketball — she’s on the petite side though and she quickly devised a way to cheat!

Kivrin discovered an old pair of Colin’s sunglasses and had a blast trying them on!

The first week of December, we decorated our tree with a few oversized ornaments.

Kivrin and Mama play a game that started out as “horsey” but quickly developed an elaborate flip over Mama’s head!

Thanksgiving visit to Nana’s house means flying Uncle Lee’s helicopters around the living room. Note the phone in Kivrin’s hand here, we had to get Nana’s bedroom handset for her, so that she would leave the other telephone alone.

Papa Staley, Lissa, Kivrin, Colin are dropping leaves over the bridge into the stream, then rushing to the other side to lean over and watch them on their path down the stream.  At Shaw’s Garden in St. Louis.

Lissa and Kivrin enjoying the Van de Graaff generator at the Magic House in St. Louis.

Kivrin L-O-V-E-S to ride on Uncle Jim’s special John Deere tractor. She can’t reach the pedals, or the ground, but she likes to be pushed all around the driveway.

Kivrin is learning new things every day! But they don’t all photograph very well. Since this is basically Kivrin’s online baby book, here is list of things she has been enjoying doing lately at 13 months old.

  • Pointing to her nose or ears when we ask. Pointing to our noses.
  • Pulling up her shirt to show her belly button. Wanting to be tickled on the belly!
  • Sticking out her tongue when we talk about tongues or we stick out our tongue first.
  • Playing chase by tagging us then running away and looking back at us expectantly
  • Shaking her head “no” and sometimes saying “nyeh”
  • Vocalizing more, although not specific words
  • Pointing and vocalizing when she wants or does not want something
  • Singing/shouting along with music, dancing and clapping
  • Almost making the animals sounds for goat “meh” and lion “rawr”
  • Trying to run or walk really fast
  • Crawling up on the couch
  • Trying to carry all of her dolls at once
  • Stacking all of her dolls in her lap
  • Cuddling her baby and rocking it
  • Pointing to animal pictures and enjoying mama and daddy making animal sounds
  • Pointing to the cat, the rabbit, etc. in the book when we ask her to
  • Collecting animal magnets or other small items in bag or bucket and carrying around
  • Understands that doorknobs and the baby gate handles are the key to opening things, also knows keys are needed for door and car
  • Opening her mouth wide and saying “aaahh”
  • Bringing a book to mama or daddy and sitting in a lap to read, repeatedly
  • Walking around the library looking at all the books and people and playing in the kids areas
  • Going down the slide and swinging high on the baby swing at the park
  • Stacking things, fitting containers inside each other
  • Riding in the stroller on walks outside or inside
  • Throwing balls across the room (and throwing toys and food too)
  • Sometimes eating part of her meal with a spoon or fork, especially with some assistance
  • Climbing up on the step stool to wash her hands in the bathroom (she would do this all day and is upset when she has to stop)
  • Fussing when she doesn’t get her way, with a peculiar “whinny” noise sort of like a horse
  • Drooling (hopefully new teeth are coming, she still just has 4 on top and 2 on bottom)
  • Standing up in the bathtub, every bath, the entire time
  • Drawing with crayons, markers, ink pens, anything…
  • Sticking stickers on paper
  • Petting the cats, trying to snuggle the cats, chasing the cats trying to pet them more
  • Fake talking on the phone (or anything small like a booklight, remote control, iphone, toy phone, etc)
  • Drawing on the magna doodle

Current favorite foods that she seems to enjoy include frozen peas, plain tofu, whole wheat rotini with red sauce, whole wheat waffles, graham crackers, bananas, pieces of cheddar or colby cheese, cottage cheese, almost any pureed baby food vegetables, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, blueberries, raisins, sesame crackers. We only offer her water or whole milk to drink and she likes both.

hugging her dolls

She had a big pile and I asked her to hug her baby dolls for this picture. She was happy to oblige.

pushing the button herself

On the popup toy, she can now push the center buttom to make the panda pop up all by herself, but she likes it better when someone sees her do it and cheers for her “You did it! You pushed the button all by yourself!” and claps for her.

smushing playdough

Our first attempt with playdoh was not a success — Kivrin kept trying to eat the playdough. After I showed her how to smush it a dozen times, she finally got the hang of it, at least for a few seconds.

“Here Comes Science” by They Might Be Giants came in a package from Papa Staley this week — and has been played constantly ever since in our kitchen!

helping in the kitchen

Kivrin wants to help in the kitchen now, and one of her favorite ways to help is by making music with the pots and pans!

Leigh Anne and Colin flew in from Milwaukee and we drove from Topeka to meet up for a fun weekend at Papa Staley’s house in Collinsville!

We visited Nana Herring for lunch on Friday, and although we missed her Cahokia Mounds retirement party by a few days, both great-grandkids enjoyed playing with her party balloons! Uncle Lee brought out his remote controlled helicopters which were a HUGE hit with everyone. Kivrin even got to color a picture for Nana, and I don’t think we got crayon on the coffee table!

On Friday night we met the Staley Family at Alfonzo’s in Maryville for some pizza and fun! Kivrin enjoys the flashing lights and sounds of course. She isn’t exactly skilled at the games yet, but she has fun trying to play!

Into an already full weekend we added some extra excitement on Saturday, including a trip to Shaw’s Garden for a children’s fair and to meet up with Dave’s family, a baseball game (the Cardinals beat the Brewers which made Colin happy at least), and a visit from Kate’s family in the evening.

We enjoyed walking to Woodland Park together, and playing on the playground. Kivrin is a brave one and likes to go down the slide on her own, she just needs help getting up the steps sometimes and getting seated before she slides, so she doesn’t go head first! The weather was warm enough to play baseball outside in Grandpa’s yard, and enjoy his flower garden. Kivrin especially loved playing in the back of Papa Staley’s pickup truck. Her hard soled shoes made a satisfying loud noise when she stomped her feet, she was tall like the grownups, and Mama kept playing peek-a-boo over the edges and through the windows.

Kivrin is obsessed with some Melissa and Doug animal magnets we got at the Toy Store. Favorite things — animal pictures, little things to move and carry, toys to play with while standing and walking, toys that make grown ups make animal noises, toys to put in a bucket or bag, toys to get in trouble for putting in mouth, toys to stack, toys in a set to carry and leave all over the house, toys that stick to some things but not others — all in one!

A verbal snapshot of Kivrin’s life

  • Kivrin can count to ten! And she does. Frequently! 11 years ago
  • Later, no thank you, now, one more time, almost done, excuse me, please. All powerful words from the mouth of a toddler... 11 years ago
  • Kivrin is two years old today! Happy Birthday baby girl, we are so impressed and amazed by the person you are growing up to be! 11 years ago
  • Toddler logic: Blowing on the outside air on a sweltering day will cool it off enough that mommy will agree it's not too hot for a walk. 11 years ago
  • Toddler logic: Kivrin skinned her knee, therefore her baby doll needs a bandaid. 11 years ago
  • Kivrin switched from the terse "hi" on her play phone to a more elaborate "ay-yo" hello style greeting. Verbal skills increasing daily!!! 12 years ago
  • This morning Kivrin choked on a cracker and made a mess of her shirt/carseat on the way to school. She named the incident her "big cough." 12 years ago
